UPC Press Release
The Tara Towers Hotel in Dublin hosted the culmination of the 2008-2009 university pool season as England Students retained the Student Eight-ball Pool Home Internationals with a tense win over an Irish side competing on home-soil.
This tournament is played using a group format with each country playing their counterparts once. The top two teams from the final table compete for the Student Home Internationals title with the leading British team being crowned the BUCS-UPC Home Nations Champions.
England began their defence against Ireland, a team who strongly fancied taking their title with players such as Stephen Dempsey (2007 EEPF Mens European Champion) and David Columb (current HESPC Irish Pool Intervarsities Individual Champion) representing them. Jon Shapland as England team manager was back again to blend the experience of Lee Morris (current BUCS-UPC Individual Champion) Rich Wharton ( BUCS-UPC Individual Champion 2007-2008 ) and James Murphy (defending Student International Masters Champion) with the new faces such as Adam Brown (Oxford), Matt Champ (Portsmouth) and Ryan Birt (Warwick) who earnt their place within his ranks at the recently held trials. With many tipping these two teams to reach the final, this opening match went the distance with Rich Wharton stepping up to the plate in the decider to draw first blood for England.
Scotland, under the stewardship of Gary Ferguson (former Scotland student representative) for the first time, were intent on making an impression in this tournament and were represented by a mix of the strong Scottish pool playing universities of Strathclyde, St Andrews and Robert Gordon. Their opening opponents were Wales, the perennial underdogs in this tournament, but in previous years have demonstrated that they are not afraid to upset this so-called form book. Team Manager Huw Stapleton, regarded by many to be the backbone that harnesses the Welsh team spirit, led a Welsh contingent who were predominantly Cardiff based. For both teams, this was a key opening match with the victor provided with a foothold to stake a claim for a final berth. In a further example of how fiercely this tournament is contested, a deciding frame was again required with the scores at 10-10 and it was Scotland who emerged with a key win.
Day two started with the second set of group matches fulfilling expectations with Ireland and England recording comprehensive victories over Scotland and Wales respectively. Each team still had a chance of qualification but England with two wins were firmly in the driving seat.
Scotland were hoping for a repeat of last year’s epic group victory over the ‘auld enemy’ to give themselves a chance of qualification but England were in no mood to roll over. England gained the early initiative and when they closed the match with an 11-5 victory, Scotland’s only hope of qualification rested with an unlikely Welsh victory over Ireland. Ireland, knowing that a win would guarantee qualification, proved relentless with the dream (for Wales and Scotland!) of a huge Welsh turnaround ending with a crushing 11-2 defeat.
With the narrowest margin separating England and Ireland in their group game, the final was poised to be a keenly contested affair. With the scores locked at 4-4 after the opening eight frames, it would be a brave man to bet that this match wasn’t going to go to the wire as well! At a pivotal time in the second leg, Ireland stamped their authority and surged into a 9-6 lead. With the knowledge that they were only two frames from defeat, Ryan Birt hauled England back into the contest with a critical victory and this proved to be the turning point for the match. Wins for Morris, Champ and Rob Cork quickly followed and when Rich Wharton extracted two visits from his opponent, he duly wrapped up an 11-9 victory by sinking the winning black for the second year running for England to retain their BUCS-UPC Home Nations title.
Jon Shapland captured what this victory meant to his England side when he said, “based soley upon the strength of the opposition we had to overcome to win it again this time, it was without a doubt our best victory yet. I am very, very proud of our achievement.”
Stephen Dempsey and Lee Morris were jointly crowned as MVP with 7 wins out of 8 for Ireland and England respectively.
Players from England Students dominated the Student International Masters providing four of the quarter-finalists. The first semi-final saw Jay Murphy (with high hopes of retaining his title) getting the better of David Columb. In the other, Adam Brown set up an all-England final with a virtuoso performance against Stuart Thompson (Wales).
In a high quality encounter which proved to be a fitting end to the Student International Masters, Adam Brown emerged triumphant by a 4-2 scoreline over Murphy with an almost flawless display of dishing to secure an English clean sweep over the weekend.

Oxford Dominate UPC Women’s Championship |

davethestudent writes: " Riley’s, Coventry was the scene as Oxford University 1st continue to set the standard in the UPC Women’s Team Championship overcoming a valiant University of Warwick 1st in the final in a repeat of the concluding match of last year. Louisa Gill (Oxford) overcame Kate Hillman (Cambridge) in a tense final frame decider to win the UPC Individual Championship.
Oxford 1st, last year’s winners and pre-tournament favourites, came through their group with maximum points and marked their intentions by not dropping a frame. Warwick 1st, silver medallists last year, were hoping to go one better this year as they progressed as the winner of Group B. Edge Hill University demonstrated the strength in depth at their university as their 1st and 2nd team held top spot in Group C and D respectively.
In the Championship format, two progressed from each group so the group winners were joined by Plymouth 1st and 2nd alongside Oxford 2nd and 3rd. There was a surprise exit at this stage for Cambridge 1st who have an established pedigree in this event and disappointment for Abertay 1st and London School of Economics 1st who narrowly missed securing a quarter-final berth on their first outing.
Oxford 1st, champions in the previous four seasons, were staring down the barrel of their first defeat in this event as Plymouth 1st were on the hill at 3-2 in their quarter-final match. Oxford 1st however demonstrated their resilience by forcing a shootout and as the momentum shifted to them, they breathed a sigh of relief as they progressed to the semi-final. They were joined in the last four by their 2nd team, who whitewashed Edge Hill 2nd in a one-sided quarter final. In the other quarter-finals, Warwick 1st got the better of Oxford 3rd and Edge Hill 1st were too strong for Plymouth 2nd.
In the last 4, Warwick 1st continued to grow with a solid performance to get the better of Edge Hill 1st. In the other, Oxford 1st made it to their fifth consecutive final by getting the better of their 2nd team (and securing bragging rights in the process!).
Warwick 1st, captained by seasoned university player Charlotte Scarff, were hoping to have their name etched on the trophy for the first time and took the first frame in the final. Unfortunately for them, Oxford 1st built on the challenges they had faced at the knock-out stages and posted an assured final performance to triumph 4-1 in a one-sided final.
In the UPC Women’s Individual Championship, all eyes were on Nicki Hoskins (Oxford) to see whether she could complete a hat-trick of individual Championship wins. It wasn’t to be though as Victoria Jefferiss (Kent) ended her campaign in the last 32. With this shock exit blowing the field wide open, number 2 seed Kate Hillman sensed an opportunity as she reached the final. Louisa Gill (Oxford) had not read the script as she joined Kate in the final and held her nerve to edge to victory and complete the Oxford University double.
Attention now switches to the Student Eight-ball Pool Home Internationals on 17-18 April 2009 at Dublin.

UPC Press Release
UPC Women’s Eight-ball Championship
Rileys, Coventry is the venue for the fifth UPC Women’s Eight-ball Championship where Oxford University will be trying to ensure they remain as the only name engraved on the Team Championship trophy!
As always with the Women’s Championship, there will be a wide open field with experienced and inexperienced teams in the mix hoping to make a victorious impression! The field of entrants is the largest to date and we welcome Abertay who become the first Scottish university to compete at this event as well as other debutants Kent, London School of Economics and Manchester.
Oxford will start as favourites, although they are sure to be challenged with last year’s finalists Warwick hoping to go one better this time round. Also in the hunt will be Oxford’s varsity rivals Cambridge. Nicki Hoskins, from Oxford University, will hold high hopes of winning the Individual Championship for the third year running but it’s not going to be an easy task. Players who share her title ambitions include Charlotte Scarff (Warwick) who reached the last 128 at the recent BUCS-UPC Eight-ball Pool Individual Championship and Kate Hillman (Cambridge) who has an established pedigree in this event.
The tournament gets underway at 12h30 on Friday 20th March. The Individual Championship final will be played at approximately 15h00 with the Team Championship final at around 19h00, both on Saturday 21st March.
